What is VA Aid & Attendance?
It’s an increased monthly pension from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, paid on top of a basic VA pension, for veterans and surviving spouses who need help with the activities of daily living. It can be worth well over a thousand dollars a month — money that can go directly toward the kind of in-home companion and homemaker care we provide.
Who may qualify
Every family’s situation is different and the VA makes the final determination, but the general building blocks are:
- Service: at least 90 days of active duty with at least one day during a recognized wartime period (you did not need to see combat or be injured).
- Discharge: other than dishonorable.
- Need: a genuine need for help with everyday activities — bathing, dressing, meals, managing the home safely.
- Income & assets within the VA’s limits (care costs are factored in, so many families who assume they earn too much still qualify).
- Surviving spouses of qualifying wartime veterans may be eligible too.
Important & honest: Compassionate Choice is a care provider, not a VA claims agent or attorney, and we don’t charge for this help — nor can anyone guarantee approval. For filing the claim, the safest help is free: an accredited Veterans Service Officer (VSO) through your County Veterans Service Office, or organizations like the VFW, DAV, or American Legion. Be cautious of anyone charging large fees to “get you approved.” We’re glad to point you to a trustworthy, no-cost resource.
How we help veteran families
Our role is simple: we help you understand whether this benefit is worth pursuing, connect you with the free experts who file the paperwork, and — most importantly — get warm, dependable care in place for the veteran or spouse who earned it. Whether the benefit comes through quickly or takes time, your loved one gets the companionship and help they need now.
To the veterans and families we serve: thank you. It would be an honor to help.
